The Beauty of Baltic Amber

Due to its’ color variation, distinctive appearance, and healing properties, Baltic Amber is one of the “stones” to know. It’s actually not a stone, it’s fossilized tree resin, but typing out “fossilized tree resin” is exhausting. The trees that give us this precious substance are presently found in Scandinavia and along the Baltic Sea bed. Also, I can relate to Baltic Amber because it floats in salt water and sinks in fresh water.

Shades of yellow make up a whopping 70% of naturally occurring Amber. The more gas bubbles the resin has, the lighter yellow it will be. Yellow shades range from pale yellow to a dark yellow/orange.

Next in line is Black Amber which stands at roughly 15%. This color happens when the resin is mixed with soil or debris before completely fossilized. When held in the light, Black Amber transforms into a beautiful red/brown shade (see picture in slideshow at the end of this post).

The least common (about 2%), is green Amber. While this color has been found naturally, it’s mainly made by heating the yellow resin. Green Amber is so rare that it was once thought to bring immortality and good luck to those who found it.

Healing Properties:

I say, “what do we want?” You say, “succinic acid!”

The outer layer of Baltic Amber naturally contains up to 8% of a substance called “succinic acid.” In addition to being a pain reliever, it is beneficial for:

  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Reducing stress/anxiety
  • Maintaining your body’s mental energy
  • Increasing awareness/concentration
  • Supporting overall heart functions

These healing properties are activated by the warmth of your skin. Once the stone is warm, your skin automatically absorbs the succinic acid. With this in mind, it’s best to wear it close to where you want relief.

For example, if you have throat pain or need emotional clarity, wear it near your neck.

However, if you have arthritis in your wrist, a bracelet will work best.

Hey Em!
Thanks for all the cool info on amber- it’s one of my favorite “stones”- and when my son began teething he wore an amber teething necklace for years. Not only did it look super cool, but I believe it really helped alleviate some of his pain. Score! Keep up the good work!
P.S. your model is SO cute! 😉
